Fit through the coat change

Fit durch den Fellwechsel

... because it is an annual physical challenge for our furry friends!

Just in time for the summer and winter solstices, our four-legged companions' bodies prepare for the beginning of the coat change. During the first half of the year, the winter coat is gradually shed and almost entirely replaced by the new summer coat. Starting from the summer solstice, the fluffy winter coat gradually begins to grow back.

The coat change in our animals is as individual as they are - depending on age, health, breed, type, and of course, their housing conditions.

Our beloved pets are clever - their coat will definitely become fluffier in winter if they are kept in an open stable or are used to cooler climates, and will also remain fluffy longer in spring compared to horses kept in boxes or warmer regions. This should also be taken into account when a change in housing is imminent - the body needs time to adjust to the new conditions.

But what exactly happens during the coat change?

The start of the coat change is always determined by the length of the day. As the days get shorter in autumn and longer in spring, the body becomes aware and prepares for the upcoming coat change. The so-called pineal gland in our animals reacts to extended or shortened sunlight hours. It stimulates coat growth and also regulates the hormonal balance and fertility.

These processes are very complex, as the entire body is involved in a coat change and must provide the necessary building blocks, vitamins, and trace elements. Optimal supply of these substances is required to prevent deficiencies and to give no chance to issues like coat loss, dull fur, and health problems.

Concern during the coat change

The immune system can even temporarily weaken during the coat change phase: viruses, bacteria, or fungi find more points of attack. A decline in performance over several days or weeks can also occur.

Our pets' bodies need time to adapt to the changing temperatures. Therefore, it is essential to support our four-legged friends optimally during this time - not only through daily grooming and removal of shed fur but also through internal support with vitamins and trace elements.

Since the properties of hemp can ideally support the coat change, we recommend feeding hemp seeds or hemp oil along with our delicious hemp sticks. For severe issues, additional feeding of our hemp powder with 3% CBD has proven effective in supporting the immune system and metabolism.
