My name is Anna-Lena Ihnken and I work part-time as a hoof carer (BPHC). I started training as a hoof carer because I have a six-year-old Haflinger mare. Her name is Epona and I have known her since she was born. Epona has always had hooves that are not easy to care for and she is prone to metabolic problems.
After a few bouts of laminitis caused by hay ad Libertum, we moved to a new stable. She is doing well here and has also lost weight. However, as the new herd is much smaller, she often gets stressed when other horses leave the farm. She has also taken on the role of herd leader.
The stress really upset her stomach, so she needed medication to treat her stomach.
To support her, I became aware of CBD oil. I am generally very skeptical about supplementary feed, as Epona cannot tolerate many things. I can usually tell this from changes in the hooves (corona band, frog or white line). When I tested the CBD oil, I was very pleasantly surprised that I could not see any negative changes in the hooves.
With the CBD oil she seems more relaxed and we have now been able to stop giving her the stomach medication. Instead she is now given a herbal product and continues to take the CBD oil. A nice side effect is that a skin change (visually similar to a sarcoid) has disappeared.
I have also tested the CBD oil myself, as I have allergic asthma to grass and rye. This is obviously very impractical when dealing with hay. So on bad days I used Epona's CBD drops. On the following days my lungs felt much better.
Since CBD oil has so many positive properties, I will continue to use it.
